Tituba was an Indian slave that served the Parris household. She was believed to be born in South America, but was captured and taken to Barbados. She was then sold into slavery, many people believed that Samuel Parris bought her from a business partner and was one of his concubines. However, she ended up marrying John, another Indian slave owned by Parris, in 1689 which is around the time the Parris household moved to Salem Village. When Tituba was taking care of Betty Parris, she had told her (and her friends) stories of witchcraft. Shortly after, Betty began exhibiting the eccentric behavior believed to be related to symptoms of being bewitched and since Tituba was the one taking care of Betty, she was automatically blamed for casting spells on her. Samuel Parris had beaten her until she confessed. She was the first witch to be accused in Salem and the first to confess. She was not hanged as she confessed early on and she also accused Sarah Good and Sarah Osborne to be witches. After The Trials, Tituba was sent to prison. Samuel Parris, enraged by Tituba when she recanted her confession, did not pay the jailer's fee to free her. However, after thirteen months, an unknown person bailed her out and paid the 7 pounds for her freedom. She was then purchased by this unknown person (who most likely bought her husband, John, as well) and it is not known what happened to her after her new owner purchased her.
DID YOU KNOW? Her husband was also an afflicted person during the Witch Trials. Tituba also became involve in the making of the "witchcake", a cake which included the ingredients of: rye and Betty's urine, which was cooked and fed to a dog. They had created this cake in hopes that the dog would reveal who afflicted Betty.
